Geographical Indication

Geographical Indications (GI) are a special category of intellectual property rights granted to products that originate from a specific location and derive unique qualities, characteristics, or reputation from that origin. These products often represent cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and community identity. Examples include Banarasi Sarees, Darjeeling Tea, Kolhapuri Chappals, and Basmati Rice. A GI tag helps protect such products from misuse, imitation, or misrepresentation, while also enhancing their market value both domestically and internationally. By preserving authenticity, GI registration not only benefits producers economically but also promotes cultural preservation and sustainable development in the region of origin.

Benefits:

  • Protects traditional and regional products from unfair competition.
  • Prevents unauthorized use or misrepresentation of GI-tagged goods.
  • Enhances brand recognition and consumer trust globally.
  • Boosts export opportunities and regional economic growth.
  • Preserves cultural identity and indigenous practices.

Duration:

GI registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely in successive 10-year terms.
